Lipitor is used to reduce LDL cholesterol by reducing the amount of cholesterol that is made by the liver.

Lipitor is used to treat elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides (or “bad” LDL cholesterol) in people who have high cholesterol.

Lipitor is used in adults and children who are 10 years or older.

You should not take Lipitor if you have a history of gallbladder disease, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking Lipitor.

Lipitor and certain medicines can interact causing serious side effects. In rare cases, atorvastatin can cause a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, potentially leading to kidney failure. Call your doctor right away if you have muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have fever, nausea, vomiting, and dark colored urine. •

Avoid eating foods high in fat or cholesterol.

Lipitor is not expected to be as effective for lowering your cholesterol levels as simvastatin. Lipitor starts to work for most people within one to two weeks of treatment. Rosuvastatin can harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while you are using this medicine.

Atorvastatin may pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while taking Lipitor.

To make sure this medicine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had: heart problems; liver problems; kidney problems; an allergic reaction to a food or medicine; a stomach ulcer, diverticulitis; asthma or allergies; glaucoma or cataracts; low levels of calcium or potassium levels in your blood; or lupus. Lipitor can cause serious muscle damage that can lead to kidney failure, including kidney failure due to muscle breakdown. This condition is more common in men who are older, overweight, hypertensive, or have diabetes.

Valsartan is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.

Take Lipitor exactly as your doctor has prescribed.

Lipitor is usually taken once a day, at any time of day, with or without food. Do not break Lipitor tablets before taking.

You may need to stop using this medicine for a short time if you have: uncontrolled seizures; an allergy to bumetanide; a severe infection or illness; a heart disorder or heart-related condition; a history of heart attack or stroke; or surgery or a medical emergency. It may take up to 4 weeks before your cholesterol levels improve. If you are prescribed Lipitor, you should be aware that your doctor may prescribe a different medication or adjust your dose based on your individual results.
