FDA Approves Omeprazole In 2003 omeprazole 40 mg capsule, the FDA approved omeprazole to treat a certain type of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with the medication omeprazole. Prilosec is available as a prescription medication. The FDA approved omeprazole in the U.S. in 1996 under the trade name Prilosec to treat a wide variety of conditions.

Over-the-counter (OTC) omeprazole is used to treat heartburn and other symptoms caused by frequent heartburn.
